A Transformative Approach to Faith and Community at Calvert Catholic Schools

Seneca Nation,

As we continue to enhance our holistic environment at Calvert Catholic Schools, I am thrilled to share a vital shift in our approach to nurturing faith and community among our students and faculty. Since January 2023, Calvert Catholic Schools has taken a significant step away from holding weekly Mass in the gymnasium. Instead, we now gather weekly as a united school family at one of our local parishes—St. Mary's and St. Joseph's—led by Father Matt Rader of St. Mary Parish and Father Anthony Coci of St. Joseph Parish.

In transitioning Mass from the gym to the heart of our parish community, we are making a conscious decision to open our students' minds to practicing their faith in the church. The gym and fields are where our students learn to lead, the church is where our students learn to worship and love Jesus Christ, and our school buildings are where the students learn to understand. This new practice has deepened our faith experience and strengthened the bonds between our students, staff, and parish communities. The shared experience of attending Mass together in a dedicated sacred space, fosters a sense of belonging and community spirit that we are proud to cultivate at Calvert Catholic Schools.

Along with our weekly Masses, once a sports season, we open the opportunity to attend Mass at each St. Joseph, St. Mary, and St. Wendelin Parish. As a school and community, we are honored to be united in this unique experience with our local parishes.

These elements are a vital stepping stone to what makes us Different By Design here at Calvert Catholic Schools. By working towards giving our community a sense of belonging, we are uniting spiritually, physically, academically, and socially every day.

One step at a time, through our various enhancements, we are working towards something bigger at CCS. There is much beauty in the unification Calvert Catholic Schools has with our local parishes. I am forever privileged and thankful to be in partnership.

“Making the switch from the gym to St. Joseph and St. Mary Church has definitely helped my faith formation at Calvert. Being in a church setting gives me the full experience of Mass by having an altar, pews to sit in with my friends, and organ for music. I feel my overall Mass time is enhanced because I am able to pay attention better and have less distractions than sitting in a gym.”
